Workshop Topics Discussed:

“Groove-based” playing is a term I use to describe my own approach in this area of my playing. This style usually involves playing in rhythmic patterns – repeated simple phrases and often with syncopated rhythms. I use a combination of chords, octaves/splits and single notes for this.
The goal in this style is to think and sound more like what a rhythm instrument would play.

Learn about creating and playing licks and patterns that anchor into the groove and rhythm of a song:

Using Splits / Tongue Blocking
Vibrato on Tongue Blocking
“Double Stop” Bending (bending two notes together)
Gliss’ (slides up / down across multiple holes)
Percussive “Pops” on notes
We also discuss some other topics that came up including: best practices when “jamming” in a live band situation.

My Workshop Goals:

My approach to teaching is focused on developing a player’s ears – playing, listening and “getting deep inside” what makes something sound great. Then showing you how to get there yourself, using effective techniques.

“I learned to play by ear, and even today, have only a basic understanding of music theory. What I do have, is 45 years experience as a working harp player – on stage and in the studio – always having to adapt to a wide variety of musical situations. That’s been the best training ground any player could ask for.”

So besides passing on a few new licks, my goal is to open your eyes and ears to some new ways of approaching playing – ways that will ultimately help you become not just a better harp player, but a better musician as well.
